In my English class I worked on conducting research then interpreting our findings and then reporting those findings in a professional style paper. This was done in a 6 person team, so communication was a large aspect in this project. We had to work as a collaborative group effectively and being able to communicate professionally and be able to work though any disagreements we had with how we did things. Overall I managed to develop a lot of skills that I can use when I work in a team setting again, the experience helped me understand to compromise, communicate how I feel about things effectively, and be able to coordinate assignments with multiple people. The following excerpt is from our scope of work document on that project, it outlines some rules we made for the group and our early plan on how to start this project. Having this was essential for us to be able to start and all be on the same page about our group, I can bring this format to other aspects such as the work place.
“As a team, we have developed rules and strategies to effectively work as a group to write the group research report. Our first strategy as a group is to include notes in the google document whenever we add or edit something using the comment tool. This will add context to a group members actions and make it easier to collaborate when we are not physically together. The group will also use the note functionality to suggest topics or ideas requiring further research or examination. Our next rule is to not mess around in the google document. While this seems fundamental, the conference group has had issues with this in the past. If we do not mess around, we will be more focussed and produce a more refined piece of writing. Our next strategy is to create an outline for all new writing. Even if the outline is elementary, it will guide group members in their writing, making it better and more cohesive. Our final strategy is to create a rough calendar/schedule for when tasks need to be accomplished. This will help with accountability and keeping group members on task.”
